Tavoitteet

The student knows what kind of policies and regulations direct water resources management in the Baltic Sea region. The student can identify pollution sources in a drainage basin, he/she knows the basics of integrated water resources management and can use GIS tools for planning of water protection measures.
The student knows the basics of water and habitat restoration methods and can make draft designs of different types of solutions for reducing diffuse loading. The student knows how official water quality monitoring works and how continuous monitoring methods can be used for assessing the efficiency of water protection measures.

- Ecological and chemical state of water bodies
- Different types, sources and impacts of loading into water bodies
- Integrated water resources management and the basics of River Basin Management planning
- The use of GIS (geographical information system) tools in water resources management
- River, stream and lake restoration methods
- Solutions for reducing nutrient and chemical loading from diffuse sources
- Planning and dimensioning of water protection measures
- Water quality monitoring

Oppimateriaalit

Learning materials will be provided during lectures and via Its Learning online course platform.

Opetusmenetelmät

Teaching will be based on classroom and online lectures and learning activities. In addition two fieldwork days will be arranged.
The following learning methods will be used during the course:
- Presentations
- Group assignments
- Field studies and case reports
- Essays
- Participating on lectures
- Multiple-choice tests

Tenttien ajankohdat ja uusintamahdollisuudet

Course assessment is assignment based and continuous and therefore renewal by exam is not possible.

Pedagogiset toimintatavat ja kestävä kehitys

Course will apply TurkuUAS innovation pedagogy methods. Learning will include real life case examples, professionally oriented assignmnets and assignments to apply the theory into the practice. Students will have active role and they will have the responsibility for own learning activities and time planning.

Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus

Learning will include diverse range of independent and group assignments.
1 student credit equals approximately 27 hours of work., and 11 credits will require 297 hours of work.
Classroom activities will be only small part of the time resources and individual and group activities outside classroom will have essential role on learning.

Sisällön jaksotus

Course will be held between 30.8.2022 - 9.12.2022
The course will be mainly held on campus. Between October - December the lectures will be held as hybrid (both on campus and online, as the GIS part of the course will be mainly online).

Goals:

Content:
- Ecological and chemical state of water bodies
- Different types, sources and impacts of loading into water bodies
- Integrated water resources management and the basics of River Basin Management planning
- The use of GIS (geographical information system) tools in water resources management

- Solutions for reducing nutrient and chemical loading from diffuse sources
- Planning and dimensioning of water protection measures
- Water quality and quantity monitoring

Course will have 7 individual parts/elements:
- Basics & Limnology, 2 credits
- Policies and co-operation, 1 credit
- Lake and River restoration, 1 credit
- Monitoring techniques and technologies, 1 credit
- GIS, 3 credits
- Load Reduction, 2 credits
- Integrative report, 1 credits

Arviointimenetelmät ja arvioinnin perusteet

Course assessment criteria:
Every course part will have individual assignments and point evaluation. Course grade will be based on total points collected.
- 50 % of the total 110 points is required to pass the course
- There is no minimun point requirement for each part
- Field day attendance is compulsory
- The course is planned so, that it is assumed that the students attend the lessons
- Quizz exams / multiple-choise tests can be done only once and there will not be renewal opportunity for those.
- Integrative course report is compulsory
- If course assignments are returned late, it will be evaluated as zero points.
