Objective
The participants are able to follow and apply standard tests for materials characterisation. The participants are able to plan and run tests for development of new materials or products from recycled materials. The participants are able to select suitable material based on date sheets and testing. The participants are able to report their work and analysis shortly and on thesis form.
Content
DThe students deepen their knowledge in materials testing and characterisation in lab and learn to run new plastics processing machines. The students familiarize themselves with topical RDI issue where recycled materials are developed to new materials or products.
Issues: tensile and bending tests, water absorption, impact test, thermal expansion, applying standards in product testing, effect of design on product’s properties, hydraulic press and 3D-printing, literature survey, data sheets and GRANTA EduPack program for materials’ selection. Reporting on Thesis form

Student workload
Laboratory work and reporting
The students measure their workload by keeping record of working hours. Total hours 5 x 26,7 h.
Materials characterisation:
-Tensile and bending strenght
-Water absorption and swelling
-Impact strenght
-Hardness
-Thermal expansion
Effect of recycling on mechanical properties of plastics
Steps to circular economy 2: Development of new products/materials from recycled material or literature survey on topical issue.
3D-printing and hydraulic press.
Content scheduling
The course will be held 27.02.2023 - 30.04.2023.
This course is a continuation to other 2 previous courses of the Materials 2 -Module. Students deepen and apply their knowledge in materials testing and characterisation. The course consists of theory and. laboratory work (50/50). The focus is on analysis and reporting.
Steps to Circular Economy 2 (2 cr) is an independent part of this course. This part consists of a small circular economy project (literature survey and/or laboratory work).
If there are less than 10 participating students, the course will be organized as RDI-version. In that case the tasks will be connected to topical RDI-projects. Currently our projects are dealing with additive manufacturing (3D-prinitng) and degradation of biodegradable plastics.
Further information
The course will be held in English.
Prerequisites: 2 years in chemical engineering studies or similar know-how, such as 2 years work in laboratory environment or in technical field or advanced syllabus in mathematics, physics and chemistry
Evaluation scale
H-5
Assessment methods and criteria
The course evaluation is based on reporting of the tasks and laboratory working activity.
