Tavoitteet
The participants are able to describe the micro and macro molecular structures’ effect on materials characteristics and behavior and are able to describe the special features of each material. The participants are able to describe the most common material testing methods.The participants are able to describe challenges and solutions of sustainable use and recycling of materials.
Sisältö
The students familiarise themselves with materials characterisation and with the effects of materials properties on material processing and selection. The students learn to execute tensile test. The students increase they understanding of sustainability and circular economy of plastics.
Issues: material groups, terms and concepts, standards, mechanical testing, stress and strain curve, test methods for simulating ageing, thermal analysis, laboratory tests, analysis and reporting, sustainability, resource efficiency and circular economy of plastics.

Basics of Material Tech:
Material groups, Terms and concepts
Mechanical testing, Stress and strain curve
Test method for simulating ageing
Laboratory tests, analysis and reporting
Thermal analysis, DSC and TGA-curves
Steps to Circular Economy:
-Topical examples from the field of Circular economy.
Sisällön jaksotus
Timing: 11.1.2024-15.3.2024
Contents: Materials technology 3 cr and Steps to Circular Economy 2 cr.
Materials characteristics, materials test methods and circular economy.
Theory will be studied independently in web. The amount of laboratory work is about 20%.
If there are less than 10 participating students, the course will be organized as RDI-version. In that case the tasks will be connected to topical RDI-projects.

Prerequisites: 2 years in chemical engineering studies or similar know-how, such as 2 years work in laboratory environment or in technical field or advanced syllabus in mathematics, physics and chemistry

Arviointimenetelmät ja arvioinnin perusteet
The grade (Basics of Material Technology) will be based on the exam (50%), reporting (50%) and the laboratory work activity (+/- 1).
Steps to Circular Economy: the grade will be the mean value of all the tasks + activity (+/-1).
Final grade is 3/5 x Basics of Material Technology + 2/5 Steps to Circular Economy
The assessment of reporting is based on Chemical Engineering's Criteria of assessment -document.
