ASSESSMENT OF CLINICAL COMPETENCE
A nurse's competence assessment is a process in which a nurse demonstrates and documents their competence in different care situations and environments. The evidence involves concrete tasks that the nurse must perform, as well as their evaluation. The aim is to ensure the competence and ability of nurses to act professionally and responsibly for patient care.
Objectives of the demonstration of competence:
- demonstrate their skills in managing various treatment situations.
- demonstrate their ability to operate safely and take into account patient safety considerations.
- demonstrate respect for the patient, the ability to cooperate, act ethically and protect patients' privacy.
- demonstrate their ability to work in a team and collaboratively with other healthcare professionals.
- communication should be clear and open with patients and colleagues.
- the nurse is expected to be able to draw up treatment plans for patients and monitor their implementation. This also includes the ability to make changes to treatment plans if necessary.
- demonstrate the ability to identify and solve problems and situations related to treatment.
- the ability to record patient data carefully and appropriately in the patient information system and to provide clear and understandable reports on the patient's situation.
- demonstrate their ability to act independently and take responsibility for their own work and patient care.
The competence assessment is planned on the basis of standardized competence demonstrations.
A. A plan for the demonstration of competence is made together with the evaluator's demonstrator, where the objectives and tasks of the demonstration are reviewed.
B. The nurse completes the tasks and demonstrates competence in a simulated learning environment.
C. The evaluator observes the nurse's actions, gives feedback in relation to the goals.
D. The nurse is given immediate feedback on the performance and, if necessary, suggestions for improvement.
Demonstration of competence is a continuous process in which nurses demonstrate their competence and develop professionally. It ensures that the nurse is able to provide high-quality care and take care of the well-being and safety of patients.
