Content scheduling

The course introduces students to the concepts and topics of health care and nursing, which prepares students for the use of Finnish in the field in degree studies and working life.

Topic areas:

Theme 1: Nursing textbooks
Theme 2: Nursing textbooks and language of nursing
Theme 3: Nursing profession's sentence types
Theme 4: Nursing theses
Teema 5: Digitalization in support of health and well-being
Theme 6: Applying for a qualification and articulating your skills

Objective

The students apply the field-related knowledge gained from the previous courses. The students deepen their Finnish skills so that they can participate in written and oral communication situations both in higher education and when getting acquainted with a working community. The students produce clear, fluent and structured speech and texts related to their field and working life. Finnish language proficiency level: B1.2–B2 (CEFR).

Content

The students develop skills needed in higher education studies of the field and learn e.g. how to use evidence-based sources. Finnish language studies focus on field-special vocabulary and more demanding grammatical structures used in the field.

Materials

The learning material can be found in the online learning environment Itslearning.
Educational materials include e.g.
- Sector-specific websites (e.g. social and health services)
- Teachers' own material

Teaching methods

The study will be carried out as a contact teaching on the Kupittaa campus. The studies include independent working and independent working in a group. The learning environment utilizes Itslearning online learning environment, Office 365 tools and various internet sources.

Pedagogic approaches and sustainable development

The course includes contact teaching, group work with other students and independent distance learning. Classes take place on weekdays from 8 am to 15 pm. The course cannot be completed independently.

Studying requires a computer, internet connection, note-taking tools (pen, rubber, notebook).

Prerequisite Finnish language proficiency level B1.

Teaching is carried out in an integrated manner so that the development of language skills, study skills and other professional skills support each other. The contents studied are professional and working life-oriented. The student is directed to get to know the field and its staff. In studies, the emphasis is on community-based learning as a pair and small group work.

Student workload

5 credits is equivalent to 135 hours of student work.

Contact teaching is conducted by the teacher Mon, Wed - Thu at 10.00 - 11.30.
Group work in small groups and/or expert lectures Mon, Wed - Thu 12.30 - 3 p.m.
On Tuesdays and Fridays there is independent distance learning.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The assessment of the course is explained in more detail at the beginning of the course.

The tasks to be assessed for the course will be specified later:
-Writing tasks
-Grammar tasks
-Oral tasks
-Presentation tasks.

The teacher evaluates the tasks with a score of 0-2.
0: to be completed the task has not followed the instructions, the language is not understandable or the task has not been done
1: accepted the task has been done according to the instructions and is linguistically intelligible
2: excellent the task is done according to the instructions; the task shows familiarity and is linguistically clear

Accepted completion of the course requires a minimum of 60% attendance at classes on campus. You can get 1p or 0.5p for tasks related to small group work in the afternoon if you do them alone or afterwards.

The course is assessed on a scale of 0 to 5. The grade is affected by the learning tasks to be completed during the course and the activity in the course

Failed (0)

The student has not achieved the objectives of the course. The student recognizes and knows how to use only a few of the subject matter concepts of the course and is not able to apply what he or she has learned.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course in an avoidable manner. The student recognizes and is able to use the concepts of the subject area of the course and understands the prerequisites for the development of competence.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course well, although there is still room for improvement in knowledge and skills in some areas. Students are able to use the subject matter concepts of the course well and apply what they have learned in studying and working life situations. The student is able to analyze his/her own competence.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course commendably. The student excels in the concepts of the subject area of the course and is able to analyze issues related to the subject area fluently and justifiably. Students are well prepared to apply what they have learned in studying and working life situations. Students are able to analyze the competence required in the field and in the field studies and the development of their own competence.

Qualifications

Minimum language proficiency level B1.2 in Finnish.
