Objective

The participants are able to describe specific features of different biomaterials and their applications including biomaterials prepared from biobased and renewable materials. The participants understand the basic principles of tissue engineering and they are able to describe specific features of biomaterials used in tissue engineering.

Content

- erilaiset biomateriaalit ja niiden sovellusalat ja kudosteknologian perusteet

Materials

Lecture notes and other linked material on Its-platform

Teaching methods

Group and individual assignments, multiple choiche task
Laboratory experiments, Lab report

Exam schedules

Multiple Choice Exam will be as an E-exam in ViLLE-platform on April xx.xx.2025, retakes in May and June 2025

International connections

Partially flipped learning where students study the given topic by themself producing notes/report which is discussed on the lectures
Presentation of selected topic (group work)
Contact teaching

Completion alternatives

Research work in the research group, Jani Pelkonen (jani.pelkonen@turkuamk.fi).

Student workload

The implementation is based on Group Tasks and Individual tasks. Reports on the laboratory work/tasks is one of the Group Tasks, and a Multiple Choice Exam (MCE) is one the individual tasks (NB! MCE is only one of the tasks, it cannot be used to replace the other tasks and it is not a course exam that could be separately used to get the whole grade for the course. The question of MCE are though based both on the theory and lab part.). Group Task 1 & 2 reporting also includes an oral discussion or presentation.
Group Task 1 is based on the provided lecture materials (in Its), Group Task 2 on provided and linked review articles and on the presentations of the other groups in Group Tasks 1 & 2. The laboratory work/tasks and the related report(s) is assessed separately as one of the Group Tasks. The multiple choice exam questions are related to all the other tasks.
The deadlines for the Group Task 1 & 2 reports are based on the presentation schedule (provided in Its) and the reports have to be returned before coming to the class for the presentation. Individual Task report deadline is 27.4.2025.
Multiple Choice Exam will be as an E-exam in ViLLE-platform on April xxx xx.4.2025, retakes in May and June 2025

Content scheduling

Theory part from mid of March to end of April.
* Biomaterials in General
* Biomaterial Properties
* Biomaterials in Tissue Engineering
* Biomaterials for Drug Delivery
* Bionanotechnology

Laboratory part will be during weeks 15 - 18

Laboratory works:
* PRODUCING HYDROGEL AND ENCAPSULATION OF DRUG MODEL MOLECULE (mEGFP)
* DISSOLUTION OF HYDROGEL AND DRUG MODEL MOLECULE (EGFP) RELEASE
* ANALYSIS OF DISSOLUTION SAMPLES

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment is based on the points for the tasks as follows:
Group Task 1: 0-2 p
Group Task 2: 0-2 p
Individual Task: 0-2 p
Laboratory Work and report: 0-4 p
Multiple Choice Exam: 0-6 p
The maximum is 16 points and the preliminary points-grade connection is the following: < 7 p = fail;7-8 p = 1; 9-10 p = 2; 11-12 p = 3; 13-14 p = 4; 15-16 p = 5.
If the reports are not returned on time and if a student is not present in the presentations, there will reduction of 1 p for each case.
