Opintojaksolla käsitellään
• Ikääntymistä käsitteenä, yhteiskunnallisena ilmiönä.
• Ikääntyneen normaaleja, fysiologisia muutoksia
• Ikääntyneiden toimintakykyä ja sen arviointia eri mittareiden avulla
• Palvelutarpeen lakisääteinen arviointi, RAI-mittaaminen ja Toimia-tietokanta
• Ikääntyneiden lääkehoidon erityispiirteet
• Ikääntyneiden palvelujärjestelmää kokonaisuutena, sekä tarkemmin vielä niin kotisairaanhoitoa vastaanottotoimintaa kuin kotisairaalaakin.
• Erityistukea tarvitsevan potilaan hoitotyössä käydään keskeiset kehitysvammat ja niiden huomointi hoito-ja ensihoitotyön näkökulmasta
• Erityistukea potilaan ja omaisten kanssa kommunikointi

Objective

Objectives
• Students will deepen their competence in the emergency care and nursing of elderly patients and people with special needs.
• Students will understand the ethical values and principles of elderly patients and people with special needs and respect old age as a stage of life
• Students will acknowledge and know how to identify any changes related to old age
• Students will acknowledge and know how to use the methods of nursing related to assessing and maintaining the health, functional capacity and resources of the elderly and people with special needs
• Students will become familiar with common memory disorders and the related treatment and service chains
• Students will understand the importance of nutrition in the treatment of the elderly and know how to plan, perform and assess the nutrition of the elderly in different circumstances in cooperation with a network of multidisciplinary experts
• Students will know how to plan, administer and assess safe and effective pharmacotherapy for the elderly and people with special needs as a part of emergency care and nursing
• Students will know how to support and guide family members in the treatment of elderly patients
• Students will acknowledge and be able to identify common changes caused by development disorders and disability and know the related key methods of nursing
• Students will be familiar with the national vaccination programme of adults and the vaccination of different demographic groups
• Students will know how to administer vaccines safely and correctly

Content

Contents:
• Emergency care of elderly patients and people with special needs and its special features
• Emergency care and nursing of elderly people, geriatrics and pharmacology
• Changes related to old age
• Risk factors that indicate declining functional capacity of elderly patients
• Assessment of the functional capacity and resources of the elderly and provision of support in different environments
• Nutrition of the elderly and how to ensure proper nutrition and provide related instructions in different circumstances
• Gerontechnology
• Memory disorders and nursing of patients with memory disorders, pain relief of patients with memory disorders
• Legislation concerning the treatment of the elderly and the services required by the elderly: home care and other services provided at the homes of the elderly
• Safe and effective administration of pharmacotherapy for the elderly in emergency care and nursing
• Supporting the involvement of family members in geriatric care
• The principles and societal significance of vaccination
• Diseases that are prevented by vaccination and the principles of immunity formation
• National vaccination programme and legislation
