Content scheduling
The course consists of theoretical lectures and exercises. The measurement technology exercises focus on using measuring devices and generating measurement data. In the quality technology exercises, quality-related topics are discussed together.
Objective
After a completed study unit the student
- has a grasp of product and production measuring operations and the documentation there of
- is aware of the impact of errors in measuring on product quality and can statistically handle errors
- can plan product and production measuring operations
- can produce reports of quality and measuring operations
Content
- engineering workshop measuring devices
- standards of measurement
- error analysis and corrective action
- statistical methods and quality verification
- quality systems in production control
Materials
Andersson, P. A. & Tikka, H. 1997. Mittaus- ja laatutekniikat. WSOY. (as applicable)
Relevant standards available on SFS-Online (free access via the Finna service).
Lecture materials can be accessed on It’s Learning.
If needed, students are expected to find additional supplementary materials independently.
Teaching methods
The course includes lectures and exercises.
Exam schedules
The course does not include exams; assessment is based on course assignments and attendance. Since the evaluation is attendance-based, no retake exams will be arranged.
Pedagogic approaches and sustainable development
The course aims to integrate a work-life-oriented approach: lectures include examples from the professional field, demonstrating how different measurement techniques are applied in practice and highlighting potential challenges. Students are also trained to use common measuring instruments correctly and shown how measurement errors can occur. The quality engineering section examines the importance of quality and quality management from a work-life perspective.
To support evolving teaching methods and learning abilities, students are expected to take an active and engaged approach, assuming responsibility for their own studies. The instructor acts as a mentor throughout the course, guiding students toward the right solutions and moments of insight.
Completion alternatives
-
Student workload
Lectures/exercises: approximately 44 hours (22 separate sessions)
Independent study: approximately 89 hours
Evaluation methods and criteria
Grading scale: 0–5.
The final grade is determined as follows:
- All assigned exercises must be completed successfully (only for exercises where the student was present).
- The quality assignment must be completed successfully.
Grade determination based on attendance (total of 22 sessions):
- Less than 11 attendances: Fail
- 12–13 attendances: Grade 1
- 14–15 attendances: Grade 2
- 16–17 attendances: Grade 3
- 18–19 attendances: Grade 4
- 20–22 attendances: Grade 5
On Wednesday, October 1 (Week 40), there will be a field trip to the Alihankintamessut in Tampere. Participation in the fair grants two (2) attendance points. No separate lectures or exercises will be held that week.
Failed (0)
- The student attends fewer than 11 course exercises and/or lectures.
- A failed evaluation in any of the course exercises (from the exercises the student has participated in).
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
Grade 1: When the student has attended lectures/exercises 12–13 times and has successfully completed the required exercises.
Grade 2: When the student has attended lectures/exercises 14–15 times and has successfully completed the required exercises.
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
Grade 3: When the student has attended the lectures/exercises 16-17 times and has successfully completed the exercises assigned to them.
Grade 4: When the student has attended the lectures/exercises 18-19 times and has successfully completed the exercises assigned to them.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Grade 5: When the student has attended the lectures/exercises 20-22 times and has successfully completed the exercises assigned to them.
