Content scheduling

The course covers the structure, properties, and operation of transformers and electrical machines, as well as their dimensioning and selection for various applications, in accordance with the course description. The course will be conducted during the autumn semester of 2025.

Objective

The course deals with the features, installations, and a selection of transformers and electrical machines. After completing the course, the student:
- Knows the basic concepts and quantities related to transformers and electric machines
- Is familiar with the structure, operation, and features of power- and measuring transformers
- Can select transformer to the most typical applications
- Is familiar with the the structure, operation, and features of the most typical electric machines
- Knows the standards related to electric machine installations and can make dimensioning for the motors for the most typical industrial loads
- Can measure the physical quantities involved with transformers and electric machines

Exam schedules

The exam will take place at the end of the course, as scheduled. The exact date will be announced once the timetable is published.

Pedagogic approaches and sustainable development

The theoretical content of the course is presented through materials available on the learning platform and through lectures. The lectures focus primarily on the analysis of example cases. Studying the theory is closely supported by calculation exercises. The operation of transformers and electrical machines, as well as related measurements, is explored through laboratory work.

The manufacturing and use of transformers and electrical machines are examined from the perspective of sustainable development.

Completion alternatives

No alternative completion methods are available.

Student workload

The course corresponds to 5 ECTS credits and requires approximately 135 hours of student work. Of this workload, around 35–40% consists of contact teaching, while the remaining time is dedicated to independent or group work.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The course assessment is based on submitted learning assignments (calculation exercises, project work, and laboratory work) and the final exam, as follows:

- Learning assignments: 50%,
- Final exam: 50%.

Failed (0)

The student:
- Does not understand the operating principles or key properties of transformers and electrical machines.
- Cannot select appropriate devices for basic applications.
- Lacks knowledge of relevant measurements.

Total score: less than 40% of the maximum points.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student:
- Can describe operating principles at a general level and identify key properties.
- Can select and dimension devices for basic applications.
- Can independently perform typical measurements.

Grade 1: 40–51% of the total points.
Grade 2: 52–63% of the total points.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student:
- Accurately describes operating principles and understands properties in detail.
- Can select and dimension devices for various industrial applications.
- Demonstrates analytical skills and broader application of knowledge.
- Performs and interprets measurements with confidence and precision.

Grade 3: 64–75% of the total points.
Grade 4: 76–87% of the total points.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student:
- Solves complex problems related to transformers and electrical machines.
- Analyzes device performance based on measurement results.
- Demonstrates comprehensive and independent mastery of the subject.

Grade 5: 88–100% of the total points
