Opetusmenetelmät
At the beginning of the course, there will be in-person teaching sessions that cover the theoretical background required for the practical work.
The practical work is the core component of the course. Prior to the assignments, learning is based on independent study and preparation. This includes familiarizing oneself with the work instructions, completing a preliminary task, and, if necessary, conducting other independent research and study.
During the lab work, learning is partly guided but primarily based on independent work.
During and after the practical assignment, students will practice reporting measurement results and critically evaluating the work performed.
All aspects require not only independent work but also collaboration. The practical assignments are carried out in teams of 2–4 students.
Tenttien ajankohdat ja uusintamahdollisuudet
There is one extra lab session at the end of the course reserved for missing lab work.
The course exam is on week 18. A retake exam is arranged in may in a date which will be informed of later.
Pedagogiset toimintatavat ja kestävä kehitys
Measurement is one of the cornerstones of engineering work. This is practiced through laboratory assignments related to various areas of physics, with applications focused on the ICT field and sustainable development. Independent preparation helps students learn to acquire technical knowledge and understand measurement principles in an engineer-like manner. Throughout the course, students will also become familiar with physics notation, terminology, and scientific standards through measurement activities. Working in small groups in the laboratory teaches basic teamwork skills and promotes peer learning and peer teaching.

Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus
This study unit is largely based on flipped learning, meaning most of the working hours in this course come from preparing for the lab work and finalising the reports.
Lessons and exam: 34 h
Preparation for lab work and exam: 40 h
Making reports and homework: 40 h
Arviointimenetelmät ja arvioinnin perusteet
All practical assignments are graded based on the submitted report.
Individual participation in completing the work may also be considered in the evaluation of the reports.
The final course grade is determined by the total number of points (maximum 100):
- 48 points from practical assignments 1–4 (4 × 12 pts)
- 28 points from practical assignment X
- 24 points from the course exam
To pass the course, ALL of the following conditions must be met:
- Attendance in at least 50% of the first 7 lessons
- At least two of the four homework submissions must receive a passing grade
- At least three reports must be submitted
- The total score for the course must be at least 45 points
If the passing conditions are met, the final grade is based on the total score:
- Grade 1: at least 45 pts
- Grade 2: at least 55 pts
- Grade 3: at least 65 pts
- Grade 4: at least 75 pts
- Grade 5: at least 85 pts
Hylätty (0)
The student does not demonstrate mastery of the basics of laboratory work,
which includes preparation for assignments, performing measurements, and writing reports.
Failure to meet any of the following conditions may result in not passing the course:
Attendance in less than 50% of the first 7 lessons
OR
Fewer than two homework assignments submitted and graded as PASS
OR
Fewer than three reports submitted
OR
Total score below 45 points
The reason for absence does not affect the attendance requirement.
Exceptions to the attendance rule may be made on a case-by-case basis in serious situations, but this must always be agreed upon with the teacher.
Examples include overlapping courses (in case of second-year or higher students and those retaking the course) or long-term illness.
Arviointikriteerit, tyydyttävä (1-2)
The student meets the passing criteria and the total score is below 65.
The student's preparation for the assignments has been weak, the execution of measurements has been largely incorrect, and the reports are of low quality.
Arviointikriteerit, hyvä (3-4)
The student meets the passing criteria, and the total score is at least 65 but no more than 84.
The student has prepared well for the measurements and has performed them mostly correctly. Mistakes may have occurred, but the student has been able to identify and correct them. The reports have been reasonably or well written, with few errors.
Arviointikriteerit, kiitettävä (5)
The student meets the passing criteria, and the total score is at least 85 points.
Preparation for the measurements and their execution has been excellent. The student may have made mistakes, but has demonstrated the ability to analyze their own work and, through that, identify and correct errors. The reports have been well written and contain very few mistakes.
Lisätiedot
One of the conditions for passing the course is attending at least 50% of the seven lessons held at the beginning of the course. This requirement exists because personal feedback and support from the teacher, as well as other interactions during lessons, are an essential part of the course instruction. Additionally, the goal is to encourage students to form study groups and support each other in learning.
Participation in lessons also requires that you respect others' right to work in peace.
The teacher has the right to remove you from the lesson if you demonstrably violate this requirement—for example, by talking loudly, watching videos, or playing games during class.
Once the laboratory work phase begins, there is no strict attendance requirement,
but the course does require a minimum number of completed practical assignments.
Course materials and detailed information can be found in ITS.
The use of AI is prohibited in exams, homework or lab reports, except in ways explicitly allowed by the teacher.
All practical matters, such as detailed assessment criteria, schedule, and discussion forum, are available in ITSlearning.
You can contact the teacher via email or ITSlearning messages.
A calculator is required for the course (scientific calculator, graphing calculator, or CAS calculator).
