Objective

Medicinal treatment basics 3 cr LÄNEHhe student shall be able to- understand the process of safe medicinal treatment and its principles in practical work- perform calculations required in medicinal treatment- use key reliable information sources for medicinal treatment- use key medicinal treatment methods and the instruments for administering them correctly and safely- apply the requirements of patient and work safety in his or her actions- commit to using the Medication Passport- utilise evidence-based information in the planning, implementation and evaluation of intravenous drug, infusion, nutrition and blood transfusion treatments- draft an infusion care plan- cannulise a peripheral vein and initiate IV infusion treatment- administer a correct dose of intravenous infusion fluid and drug according to a doctor's prescription- monitor the patient and assess the effects and effectiveness of intravenous drug and infusion treatment, parenteral nutrition and blood transfusion treatment

Contents:- Use of reliable information sources for medicinal treatment (for example: Pharmaca Fennica, the Duodecim drug database)- Drug calculations- Administration of (subcutaneous and intramuscular) injections and inoculation- Medication Passport- Working methods promoting patient and work safety- Prevention of cannula and catheter infections- Cannulating a peripheral vein- Use of fluid transfer sets- Preparing an IV drug for use and administering it- Use of perfusor and infusion pump- Care of a central venous catheter- Performing a blood transfusion
