Objective

During the Bioinnovation course, the students work in teams to create new solutions for resolving challenges that business clients from the bioscience, biomedicine and pharmacy fields have faced. The student teams work towards creating innovative ideas or solutions with a business plan and marketing strategy. After the course, the students: - are familiar with the concepts of entrepreneurship and innovation within the bioscience, biomedicine, and pharmaceutical fields - have obtained a practical view of the steps from initial innovation idea to launching the final product - have a better understanding of the skills required for working life in the industry - have developed their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to problem-solving - have developed their project management skills During the course the students will develop the following general skills: - learn and experience the innovation process in practice - enhance their teamwork skills - work on their presentation skills

This course covers the following topics: - Introduction to innovation and entrepreneurship - Idea generation - Business model and funding - Product development - Validation of the innovation - Commercialization - Sell your idea – pitching in practice

Location and time

Course starts 02/2025 This is a fully online course given through the DigiCampus Moodle platform (https://digicampus.fi/course/view.php?id=4372; login with HAKA login and credentials from your home university). Please register to the course both in Peppi and in Digicampus! All details regarding the course schedule will be sent out over email. The course is available as cross-studies (ristiinopiskelu), please regiater for the course through Peppi at your home university.

Materials

The course is taught fully online and all the material is available in electronic form through DigiCampus Moodle learning platform; (HAKA login and credentials from your home university).

Teaching methods

Video lectures, other video material, self-correcting quizzes to each module, project work in groups to solve a life science-oriented challenge (own challenge that you want to work with or a provided challenge), written report, pitch videos prepared in groups, peer-review of pitches.

Employer connections

During the course, you will do project work in groups on a challenge that business clients from the bioscience, biomedicine, and pharmacy fields have faced. External experts from the industry will be invited to evaluate the students' pitch videos and final reports and provide them with feedback.

Qualifications

- Target group for this course is 3rd year BSc students, MSc students, and PhD students - Participation in this course requires basic knowledge in biosciences (120 sp of BSc studies)
