Objective
After completing the course, the student • understands the different functions of sentence and paragraph types to express information • acquires an increased vocabulary suited for Academic English • learns the standard and academically accepted structure of an essay/report/thesis to better express one’s intentions more clearly in writing • knows how to use linking words and phrases, punctuation • understands and masters paraphrasing, writing summaries and abstracts • acquires skills in structuring a text according to academic standards • becomes more aware of one’s own writing by editing his/her own work

Accomplishment methods
The purpose of the course is to learn the skill of clear academic writing through a step-by-step approach in which participants study the rhetorical patterns and the writing process in English with extensive practice in sentence structure and mechanics, along with the appropriate vocabulary used in Academic English.
Content
Students learn, from the elements of the sentence and the paragraph, an approach that is expandable to encompass the demands of writing a text in academically appropriate English, as follows: • Paragraph Format • Paragraph Structure • Logical Division of Ideas • Process Paragraphs • Comparison and Contrast Paragraphs • Definition Paragraphs • Essay Organization
