Objective

After the course students should be able to 1. explain in theory how to dissect male and female mice and collect samples from these for biomedical research 2. explain how to process histological samples 4. demonstrate knowledge on mouse histology 5. discuss spontaneous pathological alterations in different mouse strains 6. describe the most relevant differences between mouse and human histology

Methods of completion

Online course. Structured learning activities include on-line videos, individual virtual microscopy and on-line exercises. During the course an individual learning diary is built by the student. Also, included learning activity is peer-reviewing. There are no obligatory face-to-face teaching activities during the course. However, there are deadlines for assignments every week. Online final examination is included.

Content

This course covers the following topics: 1. Theory of mouse dissection 2. Theory of histological sample preparation 3. Mouse histology, demonstrated virtually, in common mouse strains 4. Mouse versus human comparative anatomy and histology

Materials

Material in Moodle. The official study book of the course is “Comparative Anatomy and Histology”, edited by Piper Treuting and Suzanne Dintzis.

Qualifications

No requirements. Knowledge on basic histology (basic tissues) is helpful.
