On this course, the students will focus on the basics of academic research, the research process and writing academic text. The students will learn about the concepts and methods of art research, image analysis as well as the potential of art research. The students will gain the necessary skills for critical interpretation and analysis of art and media imagery The students will also deepen their skills in evaluating and analysing the visual culture.
The studies are completed according to implementation plan through exercises, lecture journals, essays and/or exams, and by attended contact teaching sessions, instruction, artist introductions, lectures and/or excursions.

The speculative worlds of art
Strange spaces, times, creatures and materials
How can we define the present? Does it always take place in relation to the past and the future? Does the present (NOW) even exist? What possibilities do we have to speculatively imagine what is to come?
The course will explore how creative world-making practices such as visual art and speculative literature, new technologies, feminist theory, etc., as perspectives and tools, can create or anticipate strange new forms of existence and temporalities, challenging our understanding of the past and opening up unexpected and potentially more promising futures.
The course aims to emphasize the need to structure experiences as fiction in order to understand them. By creating speculative systems or worlds through artistic work, our relationship with materials, objects, words and living and non-living beings will be explored.
The course will cover topics such as:
- The means of (speculative) fiction in art and art text
- Worlds within worlds
- New temporalities (times and spaces)
- New technologies, Artificial Intelligence, AR, VR, etc.
- Trying to pay attention to the overlooked, including non-human beings and matter
- The interconnection between the digital world and natural systems
- The invisible made visible or sensed

During the course, students will learn about digital photography, image processing and the basics of post-production. During the course, students will experiment and explore the possibilities offered by digital methods in their own artistic work, as well as learn about the specific issues related to the photographing of artworks, both in terms of camera technology and lighting. During the course, students will design a portfolio and learn how to update it.
The course is divided into two parts:
In the intensive week (week 40 Tue 1 Oct - Fri 4 Oct), students will learn how to use a digital camera and lighting in repro photographing their artwork.
On Tuesdays in weeks 43-47 we focus on post-production (Lightroom, Adobe Bridge, CameraRaw and Photoshop) and the basics of layout work (InDesign).

The course introduces the technical basis of photography through theory and various short exercises. The emphasis is on an experimental and exploratory approach to artistic work - the observation and mastery of photographic phenomena, through which the student develops a strong understanding of photographic techniques.

The course concentrates on black-and-white film photography and analog black-and-white printing of photographs through practical work and theory. During the course, the students consider the expressive possibilities of black-and-white photography and apply the knowledge in their own photographic expression.

Content scheduling
There is no substitute for the magical appearance of a black and white image on photographic paper in the darkness of the darkroom. Digital printing methods cannot beat a skillfully printed black and white print in terms of quality, durability and, especially, experience. Making a silver gelatine print is a combination of vision, creativity and skill. A successful print is a conscious interpretation of the content of the negative by the artist.
In this course you will learn how to print authentic silver gelatin prints from your own black and white film negatives in the darkroom. We will focus on producing a finished black and white print in an archival quality. During the course we will also make images on fibre paper and go through the steps of finishing the print, such as: reducing, toning and spotting.
On completion of the course, students will be able to print silver gelatin prints from black and white film negatives in an archival quality. They will be able to find the basic exposure time using test strips, control image contrast, and make local corrections through additional exposure, shading and veiling. The student will master the post-processing of a finished print: reducing, toning and spotting. Colour film will also be developed during the course, but prints will not be printed.
WORK SAFETY will be carefully reviewed and examined at the beginning of the course, mandatory! It is important to understand the risks of working with chemicals, both to yourself and the environment. We emphasize an ecological way of working.
Attendance is compulsory, especially during the first two weeks of the course.
Please bring protective clothing, a work jacket (no woollen sweater), preferably also your own chemical-resistant rubber gloves.

Joint Implementation: Documentary Photography + Photographic Methods II
The courses are implemented together, with the same program applied to both.
The implementations are linked so that each student creates an independent, sequential series as part of the documentary photography project. The course also deepens skills in image editing, InDesign, and printing, while introducing the requirements that the print industry imposes on images.
The main focus is on each student’s individual artistic work within the documentary project and its sequential execution in the Photographic Methods II course.

The students will be able to:

Content
During the workshop, the students will learn the qualities and behaviour of wood as a sculpting material. The focus areas include the tools and safety in woodwork, the theory and practice of wooden sculpture and the development of individual expression in relation to the discussed methods and materials. The workshop may be held as a separate course or its content may be linked with projects that have already been started in other sculpture workshops.
The studies are completed according to the plan at workshops. Through these exercises, the students will learn how to use different methods, materials and their combinations as part of their expression. The students are expected to actively participate in instruction and feedback discussions.
Teaching methods
The learning methods emphasise task-based learning, project-based learning and face-to-face teaching. At the beginning of the course, the student defines, together with the supervising teacher, a goal for his/her/their work, which is approached through personal work, group and individual meetings and self-reflection.

Wood as a material for sculpture is, as its name suggests, a material-based course. Wood as a material surrounds us in the form of buildings, furniture, objects of necessity and sometimes also art objects. Ikea's chipboard cabinets are made of wood, as are the Baroque cabinets that have been declared of cultural and historical value. Trees grow in forests, sometimes even through the asphalt on the sunny side of the pavement, and branches and leaves fall to the ground. Trees have a life cycle and research shows that they are also capable of communicating with each other (see The secret life of trees). Students will critically reflect on the relationship of the material to their work plan and their chosen working methods. How the nature of the material is revealed in the student's work and how it relates to debates in the field of contemporary art. Students will produce their own independent work or process exploring the qualities of the material within the given constraints.

The learning task forms the basis of the assessment, which focuses on the appropriate scale of the work, control of the work process and artistic expression. All assignments given during the course must be completed and will contribute to the assessment. Oil Painting Techniques 22.10.-14.11.2024
The main focus of the course is to introduce the student to linseed oil-based painting techniques and to deepen the techniques according to the student's starting level. The use of different painting fluids will be practised and the student will explore his/her own field of painting. You will also learn tempera techniques and how to use colour pigments in a practical way. Students may choose to complete the entire course working with tempera paints. During the course, students will learn how to do traditional gluing, chalk priming and semi-oil priming on MDF and canvas. You will learn how to combine oil paint and tempera and how to apply a chalk finish, also with a view to watercolour painting. Attention will be paid to safety and ecologically sound working practices. To learn collegial skills, working with others in the same workspace.
The list of materials required for the course is given at the beginning of the course:
4 small (about 1-2 dl) glass jars/glass bottles.
larger glass jar for storing brushes + rapeseed oil.
Pine needles
palette or other tray for mixing paints (e.g. glass plate or disposable plates),
ready-to-use Gesso (plastic glue primer) for priming oil paint
palette knives
brushes

respirator (a normal face mask will do)

In addition, bring to the painting class: a painting pad/base as needed and, depending on your painting hand, protective gloves if necessary. The school will provide a small amount of oil paints, painting fluids and the painting surfaces for the exercises in the course. The ready-to-use gesso can be purchased by the students themselves, but the school will provide the materials, tempera emulsions and pigments for the primers taught in the course. NOTE: The Autumn 2024 painting course does not include the building of a border frame or the tightening of the canvas - it is assumed that you have mastered these before the course starts. If you do not know how to make a border frame, you can paint on a sheet or, if possible, learn how to make a frame in the Workshop before starting the painting course.

The course introduces the content and modes of expression in contemporary art. What can a painting say about today’s society, and how? Which materials are environmentally sustainable? The students will discuss the available modes of expression for an artist’s message in relation to the interpretation of the viewer. The course may also include visits to the studios of contemporary artists and artist lectures on the process of painting. Objective
The students will develop their skills in goal-oriented and methodical working. They will expand their understanding on prints as a method and form of expression in contemporary art.
Content
On this course, the students will expand their competence in a selected method. The course introduces Printmaking in the field of Contemporary Art using topical techniques and methods. The course will be integrated with Printmaking as Expression II.

Content scheduling
Students will be introduced to the basic principles of stop motion puppet and set building. During the course students will be working in small groups. These groups will function as a production teams that produces a preproduction materials ready for a short stop motion production (duration 2-4 minutes).
This course is first part of a bigger ensemble. It will start already in 16th of January and will focus on preproduction (script development and building the stop motion puppets and sets). Puppet and set building will take place in the workshop in Linnankatu from 20nd of Febryary to 17th of March.
To achieve the best technical and artistic knowledge and understanding of the stop motion technique it is recommendable to take part also in the following course that will focus on animation, lighting and cinematography of stop motion production.
Animation, lighting and cinematography in Stop Motion production -course will start 20th of March in the Big Studio in Lemminkäisenkatu (LEM_B162) and will continue until end of May.

Objective
The students will be able to:
• use contemporary methods and modes of expression in their own work
• consider their expression from the aesthetic and ethical perspective
• critically analyse and develop their own three-dimensional expression
• actively follow and analyse regional, national and international trends and phenomena in sculpture
Content
The students will focus on the content and modes of expression in contemporary sculpture. What can a three-dimensional object say about today’s society, and how? Which materials are environmentally sustainable? The studies introduce topical aspects of contemporary sculpture, such as spatial, multisensory and cross-disciplinary modes of expression as well as the relationship between a work and the audience.
The studies are completed according to the plan at workshops. During this course, the students will design and execute a three-dimensional work of art or collection of works. In addition, the students will create a visual presentation about a contemporary sculptor of their choice as instructed by the teacher and based on source materials. The course may also include visits to exhibitions and studios, artist lectures and excursions.
Teaching methods
The learning methods emphasise task-based learning, project-based learning and face-to-face teaching. At the beginning of the course, the student defines, together with the supervising teacher, a goal for his/her/their work, which is approached through personal work, group and individual meetings and self-reflection.

Content scheduling
During the course, three-dimensional sketches will be designed and executed as part of a development plan for the Linnanniemi Arts District. The City of Turku's has commissioned the Arts Academy to design sculptural roadblocks, which it hopes will support the character of the new district. One of the sketches produced during the course will be selected for further development and production. The course "Wood as a material for sculpture" will run concurrently with this course.
The actual course is preceded by an intensive workshop (1 credit) during the workshop week and the week of independent work, aimed at gathering material and sketching out preliminary ideas. The week's programme includes exploring the topic, benchmarking different models, visiting places (documenting the places for further study) and getting to know the specific features of the area, etc. During the workshop, students will collectively carry out a background material survey and independently create a series of quick sketches of ideas (using ceramics as material).
For the actual course delivery (5 credits), students select 1-2 drafts produced in the intensive phase for further development. The selection may be supported by a discussion session with a representative of the commissioning agency to spar with the students. The sketches will be turned into a finalised 1:3 scale work proposal. The material used for the miniatures will be plaster. We will also organise a visit to a concrete foundry to make the basics and possibilities of the realisation process more concrete.
The material produced in the final part of the sketching phase will be put together into an exhibition (in the House of Arts). The exhibition will include scale models, ceramic sketches, and possibly digitally realised image prints of concrete columns in their "real" positions (as prints or on screen) and 3D modelled sketches to be tested with an AR application.

Assessment methods and criteria
The learning task forms the basis of the assessment, which focuses on the appropriate scale of the work, control of the work process and artistic expression. All assignments given during the course must be completed and will contribute to the assessment. At the end of the course, there will be an individual assessment discussion, either common to all or alternatively between the student and the teacher. Self-assessment, peer and teacher assessment will be emphasised in the assessment discussion.
