In this course, you will reflect on your learning in the form of a learning diary. From the very beginning, think about what you learn and how you can use it in the future working life.

Objective

• Understand the significance of peer tutoring in modern working environments.
• Develop communication and interaction skills in tutoring situations as well as in professional life.
• Evaluate and improve one's own mentoring skills.
• Gain confidence through self-leadership to present and facilitate events.
• Identify personal strengths and areas for development as a coaching mentor.

Teaching methods

Presentation of the course at the teams meeting xx.xx. 2024 (in English)
The course will then start with an intensive learning period, first in a self-directed way in the ITSlearning environment and then progressing quickly to group work with other peer tutor students.

Together, you will prepare for the group start of the Master studies on 2 September 2024 (orientation day) from 9 am to 4 pm. While you will make plans for the day together with students from many different study programs, each of you will implement the plan with the students from your own study program. For example, YSMANK students are involved in the start of the YSMANK24 starting group.

The final plan of the day will be discussed with the tutor teacher.

You will also work according to your own plan to support new students throughout the autumn, for example by organising 6 teams meetings.

This will allow you to put into practice what you have learned in self-directed and group tasks.

In this course you will reflect on your learning in the form of a learning diary. From the very beginning, you will reflect on what you learned and how you can use what you learned in your professional life.

Interaction, mentoring, facilitation and self-management skills are also key skills for working life and you will also get good tips, for example for workshop activities in your work community, etc., to face challenging situations.

A sustainable future requires change agents, so in addition to professional competences, the studies develop learners' innovation competences, self-awareness, curiosity, ethical skills, leadership, empathy and responsibility. By developing such generic skills in the delivery and methods of learning, it also contributes to sustainable development.
The activities will use, among others, the EU's GreenCOMP framework.

Student workload

Individual reflective diary of learning and independent engagement with learning material

A series of group work and discussions to prepare for the "demonstration" of what has been learned. Practical application of what has been learnt in the demonstration, e.g. at new students' induction days.

Peer tutor tasks during the "screening" and during the autumn term (e.g. receptions)

Support and guidance. Your role is to help them adapt to their new environment, answer their questions and help them with their studies.

Community: you will foster a sense of community and group dynamics. You encourage students to participate in common activities and build strong bonds.

Mentoring: you will help students to progress in their studies. This can include sharing time management skills, advising on study strategies and much more.

Sharing experiences: you will share your learning experiences and the best ways to deal with issues such as timetabling, group work and other practical matters that students may be thinking about at the beginning of their studies.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Evaluation scale: Pass/Fail

Participation and attendance: The student is expected to complete the study unit, the exercises and actively participate in the planning and development of the peer tutoring. The student must be present and participate in the meetings and tasks according to the schedule of the course.

Assignments and tutoring: The student must complete the assignments given during the study period and participate in the tutoring of new students.
Reflection and evaluation of learning: The student must reflect on own tutoring activities and evaluate the learning during the study period. This is done through a written learning journal and peer review.

Peer learning and collaboration: The student is expected to participate in collaboration with other students and new students in the course. This can include teamwork, new ideas and sharing information with others.

The assessment is based on the student's ability to meet the criteria set by the course and demonstrate sufficient understanding and skills in peer tutoring. The student is expected to meet all the requirements successfully in order to successfully complete the course.
