Objective

After completing the course the student:
- is able to use multimeter and oscilloscope
- can name common components used in electronics and knows their basic characteristics
- can calculate currents, voltages and resistances as well as powers in simple circuits
- knows the basics of digital and analog blocks and their couplings in electronics.

Content

- Basic concepts of Circuit analysis and measurements: current, voltage, resistance, power
- Active and passive components used in electronics
- Basics of analog and digital electronics

Materials

Lecture notes, links and videos on the course's ITSlearning page

Teaching methods

Lectures, lab sessions, pair work, independent study

Exam schedules

Lab test will take place in week 49.

International connections

During the course we will learn electronics skills fundamental for an ICT-engineer's background knowledge. Most of the learning happens in the electronics lab, during hands-on assignments where students work in pairs to build circuits and measure how they operate.

Sustainable development aspects are considered during the course. In lectures, the applications of electronics in creating an ecologically sustainable and resilient society are highlighted. Wasteful practices in the lab are discouraged.

Completion alternatives

Not available.

Student workload

Contact hours (lectures and lab sessions): 51 h
Independent study, preparing for the labs and lab test, writing lab reports: 79 h

Content scheduling

The course will begin in week 36 and end in week 50.

Topics:
- Basic concepts of circuit analysis and measurements: current, voltage, resistance, power
- Basic usage of the oscilloscope to measure and analyse AC signals
- Basics of analog and digital electronics
- Active and passive components used in electronics, such as transistors, operational amplifiers and logic gates

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment consists of three parts:
- Reports for assignments 1-8 (10 p each, total 80 p), throughout the duration of the course
- Lab test (15 p), on week 49
- Lecture attendance (5 p in total, 1 p per lecture excluding the first one)

The total points to be obtained: 100 p.
To pass, the following three conditions must all be met:
1) At least three reports from the first four assignments (1-4) must be handed in by the deadline of assignment 4 and the total points from those first four assignments must be at least 9 p.
2) At least three reports from the last four assignments (5-8) must be handed in by the deadline of assignment 8 and the total points from those last four assignments must be at least 9 p.
3) The total number of points by the end of the course must be at least 26 p.

The grade boundaries are:
0-25 = FAIL
26-40 = 1
41-55 = 2
56-70 = 3
71-85 = 4
86-100 = 5

- If a submitted report is missing half or more of either the pre-assignments or the lab tasks, it will receive 0 p.
- If a submitted report has received 0 p or the lab tasks of the report contain otherwise significant errors, the report may be resubmitted, provided that the erroneous lab work is redone.
- If a report is submitted after the deadline, it will receive a reduction of 4 p. This also applies to resubmitted reports.

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

Total points 25 or less
or
fewer than three reports from the first four assignments (1-4) are handed in by the deadline of assignment 4 or the total points from those first four assignments is less than 9 p
or
fewer than three reports from the last four assignments (5-8) are handed in by the deadline of assignment 4 or the total points from those last four assignments is less than 9 p

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

26-40 points = 1
41-55 points = 2

And
- At least three reports from the first four assignments have been handed in with total points of at least 9 p
- At least three reports from the last four assignments have been handed in with total points of at least 9 p

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

56-70 points = 3
71-85 points = 4

And
- At least three reports from the first four assignments have been handed in with total points of at least 9 p
- At least three reports from the last four assignments have been handed in with total points of at least 9 p

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

86-100 points = 5

And
- At least three reports from the first four assignments have been handed in with total points of at least 9 p
- At least three reports from the last four assignments have been handed in with total points of at least 9 p
