The course introduces students to the concepts and topics of health care and nursing, which prepares students for the use of Finnish in the field in degree studies and working life.

Course subject areas:

Theme 1: Social and health care service system in Finland
Theme 2: Health Professional Function Areas and Nurse Skills Requirements
Theme 3: Supporting well-being
Theme 4: Patient and client guidance
Theme 5: Ethics and Ethical Recommendations in the Health Sector

Objective

The students know basic facts of nursing in Finland and familiarize themselves with important concepts of the field. They also become familiar with tasks and competence requirements in the field of nursing. Finnish language proficiency level: B1.1 (CEFR).

Content

The course introduces key concepts and service systems of health care. It provides students with the basics of care and references of frame in nursing. The students also learn to search for field-related information. The course includes studies of professional vocabulary and essential structures in the Finnish language.

Materials

The learning material can be found in the online learning environment Itslearning.
Educational materials include e.g.
- Competence requirements for social and health care professions
- Expert Interview
- Ethical Recommendations in the Social and Health Care Sector
- Sector-specific websites (e.g. social and health services)
- Teachers' own material.

Teaching methods

The study will be carried out as a contact teaching on the Kupittaa campus. The studies include independent working and independent working in a group. The learning environment utilizes Itslearning online learning environment, Office 365 tools and various internet sources.

International connections

The course includes contact teaching, group work with other students and independent distance learning. Classes take place on weekdays from 9 am to 10 pm. The course cannot be completed independently.

Studying requires a computer, internet connection, note-taking tools (pen, rubber, notebook).

Prerequisite Finnish language proficiency level B1.

Teaching is carried out in an integrated manner so that the development of language skills, study skills and other professional skills support each other. The contents studied are professional and working life-oriented. The student is directed to get to know the field and its staff. In studies, the emphasis is on community-based learning as a pair and small group work.

Student workload

5 credits is equivalent to 135 hours of student work.

Contact teaching is conducted by the teacher Mon, Wed - Thu at 9.00 - 11.30.
Group work in small groups and/or expert lectures Mon, WEd - Thu 12.30 - 3 p.m.
On Fridays there is independent distance learning.

Week 8 is completely independent distance learning.

Qualifications

Minimum language proficiency level B1 in Finnish.
