Content scheduling
The course will deepen the knowledge of graphic art methods and working methods as well as the mastery of tools and materials. During the first 4 weeks the course introduces the Imageo Photopolymer and Carborundum methods and teaches how to organise working spaces in a professional manner. In the course of the course, students will set objectives for their work and choose the method(s) of printmaking with which they will independently produce a work/series of works.
The student will actively participate in discussions, guidance and feedback on materials, methods and expression and will pass the assignments, the student will work independently and will demonstrate that they have mastered professional work and set themselves objectives. This includes respect for materials and sustainability, as well as taking care of the equipment and materials in the classroom. Working in a printmaking studio is the most important tool for a printmaker.
Starting on Tuesday 9th of september at 10 o'clock
Basics of photopolymer method and material knowledge; 9.–22.9.
Basics of Carborundum 23.–29.9.
Execution of an assignment related to these methods 29.9.–6.10.
Objective work using a method of your choice or a combination of methods 7.10.–6.11. Final review 6.11.
During the course, a joint, discussion-based weekly working meeting every Tuesday at 10 a.m. The topics of the meeting will vary according to the course events, but will focus on graphic art and its methods, art content and artists of interest.
The teacher is usually present Tue 9–16, Wed 13–16, Thurs 9–16 for teaching, working demonstrations and guidance on equipment, materials and working methods. The student must be present at the instruction sessions and other scheduled appointments. Students will contribute to their work by working independently even on days when the teacher is not present. Student's working time is from monday to friday and optionally also weekends.
Wednesday mornings from 9 to 11 are generally independent work, while teachers are in a teachers' meeting.
Objective
The student can
- understand the basics of photopolymer and carborundum processes and related occupational health and safety issues
- to use what they have learned in the past in the image construction of printmaking
- take responsible care of the maintenance of tools and materials
- assess and estimate the time required for artistic work
- deepen their personal artistic expression and their identity as a visual artist
- develop their skills in goal-oriented and professional working methods in graphic arts
- deepen their understanding of printmaking as a method and means of expression in contemporary art.

This includes respect for materials and sustainability, as well as taking care of the equipment and materials in the classroom.
Student group is visiting exhibitions.
Student workload
Tasks:
Practical work with photopolymer and carborundum methods. an experiment combining the methods or a finished work with one or the other method.
Setting objectives for artistic work and working with your chosen method, a finished work/artwork series and an accompanying reflective text.
Student researches phenomena and artists of chosen printmaking expression and presents that to the group.
Evaluation methods and criteria
In the end of the workshop there will be final talk with the whole team where students by talk and prints show their mastery to the subject.
Evaluation is emphasized with the student´s presence in teaching, working process and it's target/object and professional working skills.

Further information
the student acquires the appropriate gravure paper, printing plates and the necessary personal protective equipment and working clothes (apron or other protective clothing, rubber gloves for development and others for printing, goggles, dust masks, etc.).
The student will acquire the materials for the method of his/her choice, if the school does not provide them, discuss with the teacher.
Hahnemühle printing paper 300g, available in Turku in the Itäisenkatu frame shop and in many other art supply shops.
You can also try other non-traditional printing papers.

For carborundum, you will need small sealable plastic pots or similar for gesso mixes and brushes and a variety of gesso application tools.
