Further information

At the beginning, participating students will receive an e-mail to both their e-mail-addresses - personal (if they have provided one) and student e-mail. The e-mail contains instructions on how to access all necessary channels of information and systems. The systems used will be Itslearning-environment (of TUAS), ViLLE-learning environment and Discord for discussions. Itslearning is mainly used for distributing extra materials, notifications and instructions, whereas ViLLE contains the main course material and all assignments. The discussions on Discord are both between students and between teachers and students.

After completing the course student can explain different aspects of functional impairments and restrictions in people with PD. Also, assessment and management will be introduced with evidence-based view through European PT guideline for the PD. In order to fully take an advantage of assessment tools available, one needs to also know specific psychometrics of tools being used. Students will take a glimpse on that also during the course. Although Esa fully understands that not all the students in the course will be physiotherapy students, all the students will also take look into planning the actual physiotherapy. Students will also get a introduction to ICF, International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, the framework which is applied in this course.

The student’s learning goals are modest and do not match the student’s skills.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

3

The student has completed all the assignments. The student’s pronunciation is mostly understandable even though some errors leading to misunderstanding may occur. The student is able to produce language and use basic structures learnt to meet the demands of the situation, even though some minor errors may occur.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

5

The student is motivated to learn Finnish, which can be seen and heard as spontaneous language production. The student’s pronunciation is accurate, and the use of language follows the grammatical patterns of what has been learnt. The student has completed the given assignments in time. The student is willing to go above and beyond the basic requirements of the assignments, which demonstrates the student’s orientation on Finnish language and culture. Objective

After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- identify sustainability challenges and their interdependencies, as well as different perspectives on sustainability challenges and solutions that promote sustainable development;
- reflect on their own lifestyle and consumption choices, and the practices of their own professional field, from the perspectives of responsibility and sustainable development,
- use information related to sustainable development and their own professional field to find, implement and establish sustainable solutions and operating models.

Content

- The historical context of the sustainability crisis and the complexity of sustainability challenges
- Sustainable development as a concept and a policy process
- Sustainability transition and ecological reconstruction
- Environmental sustainability: preserving ecological balance and a healthy planet
- Social and cultural sustainability: fairly distributed human well-being
- Economic sustainability: an economy that serves the well-being of people and the planet

Materials

Available in itslearning.

Teaching methods

During the course, studying takes place independently and in a self-directed manner, following the instructions in the itslearning learning environment and utilising the instructed learning materials.

The Fundamentals of Sustainable Development module (1 ECTS) is implemented as an online course, in which the student familiarises themselves with learning materials in text and video format and takes a test included in each subject section.

The Sustainable and Responsible Working Life module (2 ECTS) consists of reading the introductory text, utilising additional instructed materials as needed, and independent information acquisition, analysis and presentation in a case study task.

International connections

Sustainable development is at the core of the course. The aim is to address sustainable development in a manner that encourages participants to examine their own choices, habits and actions from the perspective of sustainability and to change their own habits in a more sustainable direction.

The sustainability of the pedagogical implementation is enhanced by the fact that all learning materials are in digital format and the course is implemented entirely as remote/online learning. Movement/travel may only be required in the case study assignment.

Student workload

TESTS: Four tests based on learning materials; Familiarising oneself with instructions and learning materials as well as taking tests requires a total of about 27 hours of student work (i.e. 6-7 hours of work per subject section).

CASE STUDY: Familiarization with introductory materials and independent case study assignment: total approx. 54 h of student work. N.B! The majority of the workload consists of data acquisition and analysis; compiling the results of the work and presenting them in a ready-made poster template makes up only a small part of the total workload.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Passing a test requires that the student has been able to answer correctly to 80% of the test questions. There is no limit to the number of times you can respond.

An approved case study assignment requires that the output (poster) submitted by the student meets the following criteria:
- is based on diverse and critical information gathering using different types of information sources.
- demonstrates the ability of the student to examine working life practices analytically and critically from the perspective of sustainability and responsibility, taking into account the different dimensions of sustainable development.
- demonstrates an understanding of the specific characteristics of one's own professional field and the operations of the selected organization/sector, as well as the sustainability and responsibility issues that are central to the field / sector / target organisation.
- demonstrates an understanding of the practical challenges related to sustainability and responsibility in working life and an ability to come up with ideas for new or improved solutions applicable in the context of the selected organization and/or in other organization in the same sector.

Content scheduling

The course consists of two modules:

• Fundamentals of Sustainable Development (1 ECTS)
• Sustainable and responsible working life (2 ECTS)

You can take either the first module alone (1 ECTS), or both modules, i.e. a total of 3 ECTS. Both modules are completed independently and according to your own schedule. However, the course modules will be assessed and the credits registered only in the end of semester. The deadline for submitting all the assignments will be 8.12.2024.
